Connecting with Southeast Florida's Watery Wildlife

In southeast Florida, encountering sharks, manatees, goliath grouper, and sea turtles offers a unique thrill. But what draws locals and visitors to seek out these encounters? Why swim with sharks or witness goliath grouper spawning? FAU professor Bryan H. Nichols explores our fascination with wild animals, including potentially risky encounters, and how these interactions can enrich education and foster connections between species. Delving into concepts like shifting baselines and the loss of wildlife experiences, we'll also discuss the significance of kinship, awe, and rewilding. Participants will share their own wildlife anecdotes and contribute to ongoing research into meaningful wildlife encounters. Join us to delve into the complexities and rewards of connecting with nature's wonders.
