Disdain: Bitter Rivalries Among the Greats in the Arts and Physics

Not widely known is that several of the greatest figures in philosophy, art, music, and physics were involved in intense professional rivalries.  The Italian word "sdegno" first defined this phenomenon perfectly in its most famous form, Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci. Before that, there were Aristotle and Plato, then Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, Ravel and Debussy, and Einstein and Heisenberg, which included the possibility of assassination. In each instance, the reasons were very different. But the disdain was always the same, personal and bitter. While these rivalries often led to personal animosity and bitter exchanges, they also spurred each individual to push the boundaries of their respective fields, ultimately contributing to the advancement of human knowledge and culture. Join Dr. Rakower and learn why these men just could not get along!
