Puccini and the Girl: The Life of Puccini Through Silent Cinema and Opera

Join us for an exploration of the captivating fusion of Giacomo Puccini's operatic brilliance and the silent storytelling of cinema, epitomized in Paolo Benvenuti's film, 'Puccini and the Girl' (2008). This presentation uncovers the profound impact of Puccini's life, notably the tragic suicide of his maid Doria Manfredi in 1909, on his compositions, particularly 'La Fanciulla del West.' Through the innovative narrative techniques of silent film, we delve into Puccini's personal and professional realms, navigating the intricate balance between historical accuracy and artistic interpretation. Embark on a journey through opera and cinema, where Puccini's timeless melodies and tumultuous experiences are immortalized in silent frames, offering fresh insights into the legacy of one of opera's most illustrious composers. Relevant scenes from the film will be shown.

Live In-Person with Video Catch-up.  Available 2-3 business days after live lecture. You will have approximately two weeks to view the video.
