The Jews of Sicily: A Legacy of One Thousand Years

The history of Sicilian Jews spans over 1000 years, with its origins shrouded in mystery. While Jews are believed to have resided in Sicily since the Second Temple period (2nd century BCE), archaeological evidence only confirms their presence from the 2nd century CE. By the late 15th century, Jewish communities thrived in Palermo, Messina, Syracuse, and Trapani, playing vital roles in economic, cultural, and social spheres. Sicily housed the largest Jewish population in Italy, with 40,000 out of 70,000 total. However, their expulsion in 1493 by King Ferdinand of Aragon led to significant upheaval, transforming their former dwellings and erasing much of their memory. Join Maniscalco for an exploration of the diverse cultural and artistic legacies of Sicilian Jews.
