Islam, Islamism and Right-Wing Parties in Europe: Implications for the Western Alliance, Israel and Antisemitism

The growth of Islam, Islamism, and right-wing parties in Europe has created new political dynamics, resulting in socio-political uncertainty and fluidity across and beyond European borders. This situation has perplexed European, Muslim, and Jewish societies in the E.U. and Israel. The Muslim community frowns upon right-wing parties' attitudes towards Muslim immigration and Islam, while right-wing parties conflate Islam with Islamism and criticize multiculturalism. Jerusalem views the rise of right-wing parties as a counterbalance to Europe’s left-wing anti-Israel bias, but Jewish society fears their association with anti-Jewish extremists. Washington and Brussels are concerned about a pro-Russian shift, and Islamist and right-wing extremist parties intensified antisemitism. Europe has never seen such a mismatch of parties, politics, and extremist movements threatening its unity. In this lecture, Dr. Rabil will examine these seismic socio-political shifts and their implications for E.U. domestic and foreign policies, Israel, and antisemitism.
