This program explores the evolution of Gianni Schicchi, not as a medieval knight, but as a character from 13th-century Florence. Join us as we delve into Schicchi's transformation from Dante's Inferno into a comedic figure in Puccini's opera "Gianni Schicchi," part of "Il Trittico." Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will combine literary analysis and musical listening to examine Dante's original text and Puccini's libretto, comparing characters, plots, and themes. We will also evaluate how Puccini's vision of Schicchi differs from Dante’s and how this is influenced by historical and cultural contexts. Through visual analysis and critical discussion, participants will appreciate the artistic and cultural legacy of Gianni Schicchi, gaining a nuanced understanding of his journey from a condemned soul to an opera star. Space is limited.
