Is it any wonder that “The Borscht Belt” circuit of resort hotels in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York produced and welcomed so many favorite Jewish comedians of the past century? Against the backdrop of Jewish culture and the immigrant experience, legends like Milton Berle, Danny Kaye, Henny Youngman, Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis, Jackie Mason, and Alan King earned their stripes here. In the 1950s and '60s, comedy shifted from the days of Jack Benny and George Burns to the era of more controversial comedians like Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Buddy Hackett, Joan Rivers, and Don Rickles. Enthusiastic “Borscht Belt” audiences launched many onto the national scene.
