We Americans profoundly believe in the pursuit of happiness and our unalienable right to obtain it. We view unhappiness as abnormal and strive to eliminate psychological pain as quickly as possible. The American Psychological Association lists at least nine psychotherapies to reduce emotional distress. Over the last forty years, a different approach has emerged, asserting that emotional suffering is normal and that attempting to eliminate it may worsen the issue. Supported by over 12,000 participants in numerous studies, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) has proven effective for various emotional disorders. This PowerPoint lecture will briefly review other therapies and present the basic principles of ACT, highlighting its unique approach to handling emotional challenges. This program is being presented as a seminar with limited enrollment to foster discussion.
