In the 1980s, 'corporate social responsibility' (CSR) gained popularity as companies recognized the importance of being responsible and transparent about their societal and environmental impact. However, it wasn't until the 2000s that ESG became a commonly used term in the investment world. This lecture reviews the historical development of CSR leading to ESG, including examples of pre-ESG capitalists and philanthropists who prioritized stakeholders like customers, employees, and communities. It also covers the development of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the growing push for ESG regulation, concluding with a look at the future from multiple perspectives.
