The Geography of the Arab-Palestinian Conflict

Most attention on the Arab-Israeli conflict centers on the land dispute, often seen as two groups fighting over the same territory each claim. But what land are we talking about? How has it changed over the centuries? This lecture will discuss the conflict by examining maps that illustrate the history of the land Palestinians call “Palestine,” and Jews refer to as the “Land of Israel.” We will look at the area before it was called Palestine, how it acquired that name, Churchill's division creating Transjordan, the UN's partition plan, the impact of Arab-Israeli wars, Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and the prospects for peace based on these maps.
