The Life of Benjamin Netanyahu: Israel’s Longest-Serving Prime Minister

This course will examine the life and policies of Israeli politician and statesman Benjamin Netanyahu. After serving at the UN and in the Finance Ministry, Netanyahu won the premiership and held it longer than any other prime minister. He was influenced by his father and inspired by his older brother Yoni, who was tragically killed during the Entebbe hostage rescue operation. Netanyahu first ran for prime minister against Shimon Peres and the Oslo Accords. Despite his attacks on the peace agreement, he honored its commitments. Considering himself “Mr. Security,” Netanyahu was in power when Israel experienced its worst terror attack on October 7, 2023. How did he rise to power and stay so long? How was Israel changed during his tenure? How were Israel’s relations with the U.S. and other countries affected? These are some questions we’ll explore in this lecture.
