The Drug Cartels: Rise, Influence and Reach   

In this special lecture, Dr. Rabil will investigate the socio-economic and political background against which drug cartels emerged in the nineteenth century, with a focus on Mexico. Then, he will examine their rise, evolution, organization and international reach including in the United States. Paying attention to the pharmaceutical, corruption, criminal and socio-political dynamics fueling the operations of drug cartels, Dr. Rabil will evaluate the strength of drug cartels, why they have been successful in plying their illicit and criminal trade, and how to clip their wings.

Dr. Robert G. Rabil is a professor of political science at Florida Atlantic University and a leading expert on Salafism, radical Islam, and U.S.-Arab-Israeli relations. An internationally recognized scholar, he holds a doctorate from Brandeis University and has received numerous honors, including an honorary doctorate and FAU’s Scholar of the Year award.
