Were it not for Fred Astaire, many of the greatest songs in The Great American Songbook might never have come to life. As the favorite singer of legendary composers like the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern, Astaire inspired dozens of timeless tunes featured in his 11 Broadway shows and 30 films. Classics such as Night and Day, Cheek to Cheek, and They Can’t Take That Away From Me, owe much to his artistry. This program features live performances and special videos of Astaire and other entertainment greats bringing these songs to life. Harvey will also share fascinating stories, including how Fred taught Jerome Kern to write “danceable” music and the starring careers of Fred and his sister Adele before Ginger Rogers.
