Seminar: Guns, Germs, and Steel: How Geography Shaped Global Power - Bundle Eligible

How did Francisco Pizarro, with just 168 men, conquer 80,000 Inca warriors? This talk, inspired by Jared Diamond’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel, explores that question through the lens of geography, not racial or intellectual superiority. Diamond, an anthropologist, ecologist, and UCLA professor who lived among Stone Age communities in New Guinea, argues that Europe’s dominance arose from geographic luck: domesticable animals, favorable crops, and environmental advantages. While this theory has its critics, it remains thought-provoking. This multimedia presentation pairs Diamond’s ideas with excerpts from the National Geographic series and invites lively discussion on the forces that shaped our world. This program is being presented with limited enrollment to foster discussion.
