Why do some people struggle to stop drinking, using drugs, or gambling, even when it’s hurting their lives? Why do treatments so often fall short? This engaging and compassionate course explores the science of addiction, including the neurobiological, psychological, and social factors that drive substance use and behavioral disorders. Led by Dr. Gail Horton, Professor Emeritus in the FAU Sandler School of Social Work, the course draws on her 30 years of clinical experience and extensive research. Dr. Horton is the author of Attachment and Neurobiology: Preconception to Young Adulthood and a forthcoming book on addiction and recovery. Join us to better understand why addiction is so powerful, and what actually helps people get and stay sober. This program is being presented with limited enrollment to foster discussion.

Dr. Gail Horton, Professor Emeritus at FAU’s Sandler School of Social Work, brings 30 years of experience as a licensed psychotherapist specializing in addiction. She has authored 25 peer-reviewed articles and the book Attachment and Neurobiology: Preconception to Young Adulthood, and is currently publishing I Can’t Remember, Did I Have a Good Time? Five Basic Concepts that Explain Addiction and Facilitate Recovery.
