Important Supreme Court decisions and multiple Presidential Executive orders in 2005 now substantially alter and affect our legal and Constitutional landscape. Long-standing, comfortable, oft-repeated Constitutional principles such as "no person is above the law" and "we enjoy three coequal branches of government" now require further examination. Frequent ongoing Supreme Court "split" decisions reflect ever-present disparate fundamental challenges between liberal and conservative views, as well as uncertainty as to continued adherence to many established long-standing Supreme Court precedents. Expect a dynamic semester, as this course will not be for the faint-hearted.
Irving Labovitz, J.D., is an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University who teaches courses on U.S. Supreme Court decisions, drawing on a distinguished legal career that includes roles as an Air Force prosecutor, FTC attorney, and FDIC contract counsel. A graduate of Boston University School of Law and member of multiple bars including the U.S. Supreme Court, he has authored legal scholarship, lectured nationally, and served as both law firm co-chair and corporate general counsel.

Generational differences are at the heart of many family conflicts, and misunderstandings. Grandparents, parents, and children may encounter relationship road blocks that are rooted in cultural/social changes that have occurred overtime. While changes are inevitable as a result of dynamic political, economic, and technological developments, the impact of these changes on personal/familial relationships can be unexpected, challenging, and at times humorous. This interactive class will explore cultural shifts that have taken place in the U.S., which have altered family relationships, and roles. Was the Scientific Revolution really a triumph of reason over mysticism and faith? For much of the 20th century, scholars believed so, but a deeper look reveals a more complex story. Join us to explore how magical thinking, hermeticism, and ancient mystical texts helped shape the development of science and medicine during the 15th and 16th centuries. Far from rejecting the supernatural, many Renaissance thinkers embraced it, blending classical knowledge with occult ideas in ways that laid surprising foundations for modern science.

This lecture will focus on contributions from Arab nations to American universities. Since 1986, more than $13 billion has been donated from Arab governments, individuals, and institutions. The largest donor is Qatar, which is controversial because of its support for Hamas and other radical Islamic groups. Saudi Arabia is the second largest contributor and equally scrutinized for its human rights record. Some have argued that the surge in anti-Semitism on campus can be linked to these donations. Is there evidence to support this contention? Critics of foreign funding also assert that it influences teaching and research to reflect the donors’ views. Is that true and, if so, what is the impact? Should universities take money from these sources, or does it compromise their integrity? These are some of the questions we will analyze in this lecture.

Since 1979, Iran’s theocratic regime has waged political, ideological, and military campaigns against Israel and the United States. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack marked a deadly escalation, prompting Israel to strike hard at Iran and its proxies, Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, while the Assad regime in Syria collapsed. The Trump administration’s destruction of Iran’s nuclear plants further curbed its ambitions, yet Tehran’s anti-Israel and anti-U.S. stance remains unchanged. Will Iran rebuild its nuclear program and military power? Will proxies regain strength? Could new alliances form, with Saudi Arabia and Syria moving toward normalization with Israel? In this timely lecture, Dr. Rabil examines shifting Middle East dynamics and explores possible scenarios for the region’s future security and stability.

Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress and visionary, enlisted famed architect and stage designer Joseph Urban to help create what her daughter Dina Merrill called “a theatrical set.” Through a virtual tour and vintage photos and video, Silvin explores the artistry, lifestyle, and charitable legacy of Mrs. Post, who called Mar-a-Lago home for 45 years. Instructor: Irene Frielich
In this dynamic multimedia presentation, Irene shares her family’s remarkable journey of survival. She transports us from their German home during the terror of Kristallnacht in 1938 to their escape into the Netherlands, and eventual hiding in a barn attic. Weaving together archival photos, interviews, and recordings, Irene brings to life the ordinary people—a baker, a coffee roaster, farmers, clergy, police, and a mayor, who showed extraordinary courage to help them. But this story is more than history. It is a story of hope. Drawing clear parallels to today’s rising antisemitism, Irene challenges us to be modern-day upstanders. One act of courage, one voice of truth, can make all the difference, just as it did for Irene’s family. Together, we can build a brighter future.
Irene Stern Frielich, daughter of a German Holocaust survivor, retraced her family’s escape from Nazi Germany and transformed her understanding of survival and hope. Owner of EnVision Performance Solutions, she is the award-winning author of Shattered Stars, Healing Hearts (2023) and speaks internationally to honor her family’s legacy and the courageous individuals who helped them survive.

Date: 2/2/2026

Building: Boca Raton - Friedburg Auditorium
Instructor: John Ury, Desiree Rosenthal Israel, M.D.
How did Francisco Pizarro, with just 168 men, conquer 80,000 Inca warriors? This talk, inspired by Jared Diamond’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel, explores that question through the lens of geography, not racial or intellectual superiority. Diamond, an anthropologist, ecologist, and UCLA professor who lived among Stone Age communities in New Guinea, argues that Europe’s dominance arose from geographic luck: domesticable animals, favorable crops, and environmental advantages. While this theory has its critics, it remains thought-provoking. This multimedia presentation pairs Diamond’s ideas with excerpts from the National Geographic series and invites lively discussion on the forces that shaped our world. This program is being presented with limited enrollment to foster discussion.

The U.S. military has been involved in over 100 campaigns, ranging from localized conflicts to major international wars. Many have been dramatized in film, and depictions of war, people who fought in them, and the home front changed over time. The Second Indochina War, known in the United States simply as the Vietnam War, lasted from 1955 to 1975. During that period, nearly three million Americans served, 58,000 died, and thousands more were scarred for life. Public support for the war peaked in the mid-1960s but collapsed after the Tet Offensive in early 1968. This course will examine how Hollywood’s treatment of the war and its participants changed over time, reflecting America’s gradual disillusionment with a conflict nearly nine thousand miles from its shores. This program will be presented via Zoom.

Explore post-World War II America through the lens of one of its most iconic developments—the Levittowns. As the nation’s first planned suburbs, Levittowns offered affordable housing for returning GIs and symbolized the promise of the American Dream. But alongside these opportunities came complex questions about conformity, consumerism, and racial discrimination. This lecture will take a balanced look at both the optimism and the critiques that defined suburban life in mid-century America. Using a dynamic PowerPoint presentation, brief video clips, and optional Q&A, we’ll examine how Levittowns helped shape American identity, culture, and landscape in the postwar era. Perfect for anyone interested in history, urban development, or the evolving meaning of “home” in modern America.

From the 7th century CE to the early 20th century, Arab and later Ottoman Islamist rulers governed one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in world history—stretching from the Atlantic Ocean across North Africa to the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. Despite its vast influence, this empire is often overlooked in post-colonial settler theory, particularly in the work of Edward Said and his intellectual successors. This course revisits the historical scope and legacy of this Islamic imperial system and examines how its long reach continues to shape conflict and political identity in regions such as Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. By re-centering this critical history, participants will gain a deeper understanding of ongoing struggles rooted in the dynamics of empire and ideology.

"Because I Could Not Stop for Death - He Kindly Stopped for Me." This is the beginning of Emily Dickinson's most famous poem. Although written in the late nineteenth century, it could have been written today. Although we all must eventually encounter death, too many of us avoid thinking about this final journey. This class will look at both practical and spiritual preparations. Why must we die? What should we do to prepare for death so we are not a burden on our families? And what happens to our soul or consciousness after we die? The questions may be uncomfortable, but they are questions we all must face. This program is being presented with limited enrollment to foster discussion.

The mass murder of Jews in Baghdad on June 1–2, 1941, known as the Farhud, is a largely forgotten chapter of Holocaust history. Over the course of two days, hundreds of Jews were murdered and raped in the streets of Iraq’s capital in a brutal pogrom that signaled the deadly reach of Nazi ideology into the Middle East. This program explores how the Farhud was fueled not only by Nazi influence but also by British inaction and antisemitism. Though often overlooked, the Farhud’s legacy still echoes today—in the Middle East, in Europe and North America, and even on college campuses. Join us to examine the historical roots and modern resonance of this pivotal event and its place in the broader context of Holocaust history and antisemitism.

Explore a provocative and eye-opening perspective on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. This lecture challenges the common narrative surrounding the so-called “Israel Lobby” by examining the far more enduring and influential role of the Arab lobby in shaping American interests and decisions. From oil industry ties and missionary agendas to the entrenched influence of Arabists in the U.S. State Department, this talk traces how successive administrations have prioritized placating authoritarian Arab regimes—often at odds with American values and strategic goals. Learn how this approach impacted the early recognition of Israel in 1948 and has shaped U.S.-Israel relations ever since. Through historical insight and political analysis, this session offers a compelling look at a largely overlooked force in American diplomacy.

While many are familiar with the chronology and events of the Holocaust, few know what happened to Jewish survivors after their liberation, which often did not coincide with the official end of the war. This powerful visual presentation will offer a deep dive into the post-liberation experience, contrasting the broader struggles in war-torn Europe with the personal stories of the speaker's parents and other surviving relatives, beginning the moment they were liberated. The term "liberation" may evoke celebrations, but for those barely alive in 1945, it was a moment of uncertainty. How did survivors, like Ettie’s family, navigate the years that followed, reunite with loved ones, and rebuild their lives in a divided and dangerous Europe? This compelling storytelling experience will shed light on their journey.
Ettie Zilber, born in a Displaced Persons camp to Lithuanian Holocaust survivors, is dedicated to researching and sharing her family’s Holocaust experiences and their lasting impact on subsequent generations. She serves on the Board of the Phoenix Holocaust Association, works as a docent at multiple museums, and has published a memoir, A Holocaust Memoir of Love & Resilience.

Pundits from all sides claim that we’ve never been more divided, but history offers a different perspective. Our nation has always been marked by divisions, disagreements, and compromises, but also by moments of unity and progress. To truly understand today’s political climate, we must view the Founders not as saints or sinners, but as flawed humans—making both good and bad decisions, embracing both noble and flawed causes, and holding complex, often contradictory views. By studying their struggles and choices, we can gain insights into the origins of today’s political disputes. Armed with this knowledge, we can make informed decisions, no matter our political stance. Join us to explore the past and better understand the present.

Inspired by actual events, Miller brilliantly dissects how fear and retribution are used as a weapon of justice. Participants receive a copy of the play prior to class, and a comprehensive, informative PBD Dramaguide written specifically for this class. Hollywood films have been America's most important contribution to the world's culture, and this was never truer than during the 1930s. This was arguably the most important decade of the twentieth century, and it marked the golden age of American movie-making with films responding to the challenges of the Great Depression and the outbreak of World War II. Movies were the most popular form of entertainment at this time, and they are a primary source for understanding the hopes, fears, and ideals of the movie-going public. They also were influential in shaping public discourse and governmental policies.

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, this program explores the global political significance of the American Revolution. 1776 was a turning point in history, not merely for the United States but for the world, and its impact was pervasive. The revolution's supporters hoped the defeat of Great Britain, the dominant power at this time, would inspire others to challenge political establishments in Europe and elsewhere. Critics, by contrast, feared the revolution would unleash chaos and undermine the social order. By questioning long-held assumptions regarding sovereignty, rights, representation, and the meaning of a constitution, the founding fathers ushered in an era of profound political change both in thought and practice.
