When literature confronts the past through the present lens, great possibilities unfold. This series will explore William Faulkner's novel "Absalom, Absalom!" Just as "Moby Dick" and "Huckleberry Finn" emerged as 19th-century classics, Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" stands atop the 20th-century literary canon. Rooted in Scripture and American literary traditions, the novel delves into the antebellum South, American social currents, the African American experience, and the Sutpen family's psychosexual drama in Yoknapatawpha County. This course will explore these themes through four classes, blending lectures and group discussions. Students will analyze Faulkner's intricate narrative, examining its profound exploration of light versus darkness, history, and human complexities within the American landscape. This series is being presented as a guided discussion with limited enrollment to foster discussion

Instructor: Kurt Stone, D.D.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In December 1937, in a nationwide poll, gossip columnist Ed Sullivan revealed that Clark Gable and Myrna Loy were crowned "King" and "Queen" of Hollywood. In a nation without nobility, it seems only fitting that fans elevated movie stars to royal status. Conversely, in England, where the monarch bestows titles, several film stars, including Laurence Olivier, received knighthoods, and one became a Lord. This series celebrates films featuring knights and dames together, honoring their contributions to cinema and theater, as well as their native kingdom. Their talents elevate them to true royalty, bridging the worlds of entertainment and tradition. The films will be shown in their entirety. No class Oct. 3.

1. “The Entertainer” (1960): Baron Lawrence Olivier and his wife, Dame Joan Plowright, in a film about an old-time British music hall performer who, sinking into final defeat, schemes to stay in show business.
2. “Major Barbara” (1941): Sir Rex Harrison and Dame Wendy Hiller star in a comedy with social commentary adapted from a play by George Bernard Shaw.

This session provides participants with a chance to delve into the significance and objectives of Holocaust education in America. Eighty years post-World War II, some wonder if the topic has been excessively covered, leaving nothing new to learn. Many question if it's time to move forward, allowing fourth and fifth generations post-Holocaust to explore diverse facets of contemporary global history rather than fixating on a six-year period from the last century. Shouldn't we broaden our perspectives and offer opportunities for deeper understanding beyond this singular event? This session aims to spark discussions on the evolving role of Holocaust education in shaping collective memory and fostering critical thinking about historical atrocities. This program is being presented as a seminar with limited enrollment to foster discussion.

THIS CLASS IS FULL.
Since Amman’s civil war in 1970, Israel and Jordan have gradually become strategic partners. The leadership of the two countries understood the paramountcy of their relationship. Jerusalem and Amman cooperate, among other things, on security, intelligence, economy, and regional issues. The two countries had managed to address contentious issues over the Palestinian question, Jerusalem and Islamism. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and King Abdullah have had personal, political, and ideological problems that are threatening this bedrock of stability in the Middle East. Dr. Rabil and attendees will explore both the resilience and fragility of the Israel-Jordan relationship and the implications of a fallout for their strategic partnership. This program is being presented as a guided discussion with limited enrollment to foster interactive participation.

The familiar elements were there; political operatives, surrogates, partisan media, divided populace, high ideals and low behavior, and serious economic and national security issues. When Thomas Jefferson, Democratic-Republican, squared off against John Adams, Federalist, the gloves were off, and this was as raw and dirty as our politics get. Aaron Burr set about capturing New York for the Democratic-Republicans, while Adams was the first to hit the campaign trail. Each side believed the other was a traitor. The base smeared one another in newspapers, cartoons, pamphlets, and widely circulated letters. Dr. Rabil has argued that although Russian President Vladimir Putin made a strategic blunder invading Ukraine, the invasion has provoked an international realignment of forces seeking the creation of a multipolar world. Underestimated thus far by Washington, this realignment has affected U.S. National Security. Washington can no longer rely on some of its former allies to pursue its foreign policy and sustain its global leadership. In this special lecture series, Dr. Rabil will probe several foreign policy areas where American foreign policy needs to be reevaluated.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a dynamic field within computer science, promising the creation of machines possessing human-like intelligence. From pop culture references like "The Terminator" to "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," and "Her," various depictions envision AI's potential outcomes. However, these scenarios remain distant—true human-like AI is far from realization. Nonetheless, we're in the Age of AI; while not akin to science fiction, AI wields substantial influence in human affairs. Assessing its impact, I'll explore whether AI enhances or diminishes human flourishing from an Aristotelian/Thomistic perspective. Does AI make us more or less human? This talk delves into the philosophical implications, scrutinizing how AI technologies intersect with our humanity in the ongoing pursuit of progress.

The invention of the birth control pill in the early 1960s marked a shift towards sexual openness after the restrictive 1950s. Women embraced sexual autonomy, Hollywood abandoned its censorious Code, and abortion was legalized in 1973. Additionally, LGBTQ liberation began with the Stonewall Inn rebellion in 1969, leading to broader acceptance. Swingers emerged in suburban culture, sexual guides proliferated, and pornography became mainstream. However, by 2023, some of these advancements face challenges, while the Internet continues to reshape relationships, including sexually. This illustrated talk explores the ongoing sexual revolution and the resistance it encounters, highlighting how societal attitudes towards sexual and gender liberation have evolved over time.

We all like to read a nice story and immerse ourselves in a plot that stimulates our senses, takes us on a journey, and solicits our empathy, laughter, or revolt. What if we put ourselves on the “other” side of the page? What if we took our pens or keyboards to free our thoughts and develop our creativity to help us experience our emotions? Yes, writing helps to project oneself. By writing down our dreams, desires, longings, and humor (even our irony), we can break down our barriers and liberate ourselves. This workshop offers an introduction to writing short stories. In four sessions, we will examine the principles of writing short texts and compose our own short texts, some of which will be voluntarily shared with the other participants and critiqued compassionately. This program is being presented as a guided discussion with limited enrollment to foster interactive participation.

Instructor: Irving Berkowitz, Ph.D.
In this lecture, Dr. Berkowitz will dissect the pseudoscientific and racist underpinnings of Nazism, the far-right totalitarian ideology that dominated Germany under Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945. Nazism and its associated Fascist system were built upon ultra-nationalism, single-party rule, and the pursuit of a thousand-year Reich through territorial expansion and racial inequality. Dr. Berkowitz will meticulously dismantle Nazi state-sanctioned propaganda, particularly "racial science" (Eugenics), which promoted the notion of a racially superior Aryan "Master Race." Jews, Gypsies, Blacks, and Slavic peoples were deemed racially inferior and targeted for expulsion, enslavement, euthanasia, sterilization, starvation, or extermination. Dr. Berkowitz will also address barbaric practices like human medical experimentation and involuntary sterilization, as well as the systematic extermination of those deemed "undesirable." He will elucidate the fallacies of Eugenics and its horrifying outcomes.

Alexander Hamilton once described the Supreme Court as the “least dangerous branch” of the American government. Although this may have been true in 1789, the Court has evolved into a co-equal branch of the federal government. From Obamacare to same-sex marriage to the election of a President, it is the Court that ultimately has the final say on most of the important issues of the day. Despite this, it may be appropriate to call the Supreme Court the “least understood branch” since the Court does much of its work behind closed doors. In fact, very few Americans are aware of the Court’s members, decisions, and day-to-day operations. The first half of this course will shed light on the least understood branch by looking at the history and inner workings of the Court. We will then look specifically at the cases and issues that have defined the Court’s agenda and American politics over the past 60 years.
Lectures:
1. The Early Court, Marbury v. Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall’s leadership to Chief Justice Taney’s disaster (Dred Scott v. Sanford).
2. The 14th Amendment: The Court fails the Civil Rights test but finds Social Darwinism in the Constitution: Justices Steven Fields, John Harlan, Oliver Wendell Holmes.
3. The Constitutional Revolution of 1937 and The Warren Court
4. The Rehnquist Revolution and the Current Court Membership

Today's art often embraces themes and styles that intentionally challenge norms, aiming to provoke and push boundaries. Amidst this, the question arises: Why Do We Make Art? Critics have dubbed 20th-century art as "the Shock of the New." This seminar-style discussion seeks to shift our perspective on art by examining past cultures' values, rituals, and religious rites, tracing their influence on artistic styles. Why is Greek art deemed "Classic," and why does Impressionism captivate? Through this lens, we explore how contemporary society's values manifest in paintings, sculptures, and new media artworks. A virtual gallery tour showcases recent artworks, providing the platform for heightened awareness and insightful reflections on the evolving nature of art. This program is being presented as a seminar with limited enrollment to foster discussion.

The Iran-Israel wars from Gaza, South Lebanon, Syria, and across the Levant are changing the region's geopolitics deeply. The missiles and drone conflicts across airspaces, the battlefields with Hamas, Houthis, Hezbollah, Hashd, and others, against Israel, Arab moderates, and the U.S.-led coalition have transformed the region into a cauldron of confrontations, with no horizons for hope unless a major change in U.S. policy takes place. Dr. Walid Phares will analyze and assess the current balance of power in the region and the challenges in U.S. policy in the Middle East. What is the future of Iran-Israel wars? Qatar, unlike its Arab Gulf neighbors, has pursued an independent foreign policy marked by an "open-door" approach. Qatar maintains ties with all parties and regional players in the region, including organizations such as the Taliban and Hamas. Doha hosts both Hamas leadership and America’s largest bases. Qatar brokered American-Taliban talks and today is playing a mediating role among Israel, Egypt, Hamas, and the United States to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and release Israeli hostages. Whereas some countries hail Qatar’s approach to regional issues, others vilify Qatar for its support of terrorist organizations. Dr. Rabil and attendees will explore why Qatar has pursued this approach and scrutinize its ramifications for the region.

Reconstruction in the United States after the Civil War remains an ongoing process, initiated not with peace in April 1865 but with war in April 1861. Recent scholarship sheds new light on this pivotal era, crucial for understanding why Reconstruction failed and how subsequent generations grappled with its legacy. Stephen D. Engle surveys the transformative impact of war, arguing that wartime Reconstruction brought fundamental change. It liberated southern slaves, preserved American federalism, and expanded civil rights. Engle's reassessment highlights the significance of Reconstruction in shaping post-war America, emphasizing its enduring relevance in our modern quest to comprehend the complexities of war and society. Instructor: Robert Rabil, Ph.D.
Since Israel’s retaliation to Hamas’s barbaric attack on the Jewish nation on October 7, the Houthis of Yemen have been harshly against Israel. They are critical of Israel’s Gaza war and actively disrupting the navigation in the Red Sea, all, according to them, in support of the Palestinians. In reality, however, the Houthis had embraced an anti-American, anti-Israel ideology preceding October 7th. What accounts for and underlies the Houthis’ anti-Israel and anti-American attitude? Is it ideology, history, American and Israeli regional policies, and/or alliance with Iran? Dr. Rabil will trace the theology of the Houthis and survey its development in Yemen into a movement against Israel and the United States, adamant about supporting the Palestinian cause and Hamas at the expense of their own security.

Zionism, rooted in Jewish nationalism, has intertwined humanitarian, moral, cultural, and religious values with its core mission since its inception. American supporters, regardless of political leanings, have championed Israel as the embodiment of Zionist ideals. However, this support faces strain due to various factors, from concerns over U.S. and Israeli policies to ideological shifts and generational changes within American society and Jewry. The emergence of movements like BDS and intersectionality, coupled with intensified discourse during Israel's Gaza War and the surge in anti-Semitism, reflects this complex landscape. In this lecture, Dr. Rabil delves into the depth and diverse impulses shaping the crisis within the Jewish community in response to rising anti-Semitism and the multifaceted challenges confronting Israel as a nation and state.

Understanding the complexities of Middle Eastern conflicts requires delving into British diplomacy during World War I. British leaders made conflicting promises to Arab, French, and Zionist representatives, pledging support for an Arab empire, proposing land division with the French, and endorsing a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. Historian Ralph Nurnberger scrutinizes the intricate web of secret negotiations involving diverse personalities, revealing how these contradictory initiatives shaped the region's conflicts for over a century. These maneuvers ultimately contributed to the establishment of modern states such as Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. This lecture initiates a series exploring Middle Eastern border establishment. Subsequent programs will delve into the impact of the Six-Day War in January and discuss the Oslo Accords in March.
